What is Miyabi?
In modern Japanese, Miyabi translates simply to “elegance” or “refinement.” Historically, however, the concept is far deeper. It represents the absolute absence of vulgarity, the sharpening of good manners, and the pursuit of understated aesthetic grace.
Miyabi is often closely aligned with the concept of Mono no aware—a bittersweet appreciation of the impermanent nature of all things. It teaches us to find beauty in the fleeting, the delicate, and the temporary, recognizing that the transience of an object or experience is what makes it truly precious.

The most prominent cultural expressions of Miyabi are tied to impermanence:
- The Cherry Blossoms (Sakura): The brief, fragile window of peak blooming is celebrated as the ultimate expression of Miyabi.
